An Ode to Hip Hop

The Boogie Down is an immersive live Hip Hop experience with a pulse that brings together emcees, DJ’s and dancers under one roof. It’s a celebration of language, movement, culture and connection.

Built from the foundations of Hip Hop and Funk, The Boogie Down invites audiences to groove and party the way these cultures were always intended: together! It’s not a concert or a dance show, it is a living exchange between performers and audience. It’s an atmosphere charged with hype and freedom. Rooted in community and driven by authenticity, The Boogie Down creates space for people to experience the essence, truth and joy of Hip Hop culture in real time.

Featuring iconic Hip Hop and Funk tracks alongside music from local artist, host and emcee MDMC, the setlist pays homage to the lineage of the culture. Weaving together influential records and samples that shaped generations, from classics such as The Breaks by Kurtis Blow, Ante Up by M.O.P. and Hip Hop by Dead Prez, the show honours the raw storytelling embedded within Hip Hop history.

At its core, The Boogie Down is about creating an inclusive and culturally rich space:

  • a place where people can dance freely,

  • celebrate music and community,

  • and feel connected through shared expression.

The work responds to a growing desire within Perth’s live music and arts landscape for authentic, locally rooted cultural experiences. While Western Australia has a thriving appetite for live entertainment, there remains a significant gap for large-scale Hip Hop works that fully integrate live emcees, hype artists and dance cyphers into one cohesive production.

By bringing these elements together, The Boogie Down not only entertains but also strengthens local dance communities, amplifies Perth-based artists and contributes to the evolving cultural identity of the city.

This is a celebration of Hip Hop as living culture.

THE CAST

  • EMCEE

    Ian de Mello also known as MDMC is an Australian emcee, songwriter and street dancer born into a Eurasian family. An advocate of Hip Hop culture and self-development, he brings transparency, conscious wordplay and raw hard-hitting lyrics to any beat. Inspired by artists like Pharaohe Monch, Common, Tech N9ne and KRS-ONE.

    His aim is to shake up the world with music that is made with the intent to bring you back to yourself. Band or not his eloquence and intrinsic performance style will get you grooving without a doubt.

  • CHOREOGRAPHER & DANCER

    Javan Reid, professionally known as Deco Zymm, is a Jamaican dance artist from St Thomas, Jamaica. His journey into dance was shaped by the rich culture, music and vibrant energy of his homeland, as well as the socioeconomic challenges that many Jamaicans face. From an early age, he immersed himself in Dancehall, Jamaica’s street dance style, honing his craft in the very spaces where the culture thrives.

    Beyond Dancehall, Deco is also well-versed in Jamaican folk and traditional dance forms, including Kumina, Dinki Mini, Ska, Raggae and Skanking. With over 15 years of experience, he has built a career that spans performing, teaching and cultural advocacy, sharing the essence of Jamaican dance both locally and internationally.

  • DJ

    Gian de Felipe also known as Antagonize is a multidisciplinary artist born and raised in the Philippines, now based in Naarm/Melbourne after migrating to Australia at 14.

    Shaped by his background in Krump and street dance culture, his sound blends bass-heavy club energy with raw rhythm and movement

    Expect high-impact selections and an underground-driven set that hits hard, moves bodies and brings undeniable energy to the floor.

  • CHOREOGRAPHER & DANCER

    Logan is an Australian born and based movement artist. His time spent dancing for over 20 years has taken him across technical, classical and street styles alike, with his own philosophy and style drawing from these many influences and how they intersect. He believes in fostering presence in all the spaces he occupies, and sheds light on humanity and wellbeing through his work.

  • CHOREOGRAPHER & DANCER

    Nat has spent the last 10 years growing within the street dance scene, constantly evolving as both a dancer and artist. While her foundation was built through training and choreography, she has recently fallen in love with the rawness and freedom of freestyle as a form of self-expression, exploration, and connection. For her, dance is less about perfection and more about feeling the music, being present, and sharing energy with others. Whether performing, creating, or freestyling, her goal remains the same: to let the music lead and tell a story through movement.

    Nat has represented her passion for street dance on international stages, competing in battles such as Ladies Call and Under One Groove in Singapore in both Hip Hop and House dance styles. Her journey has also taken her to Europe, where she entered renowned events including Summer Dance Forever in Amsterdam and Random Circles in Frankfurt. Learning from and sharing space with some of the world’s most respected dancers has only deepened her love for the culture and strengthened her commitment to continual growth as an artist.

    Drawn to the culture, community, and individuality that hip hop celebrates, she is excited to be part of Boogie Down, contributing as both a performer and choreographer.

    RHung started his dance journey in 2012 - Mainly trained in HipHop with inspiration of various elements such as House, Popping and Krump.

Known for her unique ability to connect and engage with her audiences, Elise explores R&B, Hip Hop, Soul and Funk music, while emanating her distinct brand of charm, elegance and cool, allowing the music to speak for itself. Working with a talented array of musicians, vocalists and producers, she has certainly established herself as a world class performer.
