Why you need Freestyle Street Dance in your life!

Freestyle Street Dance gives us the opportunity to explore ourselves, mind, body and soul; which in this present day and age is something that not many people prioritise and carve out time for, they don’t make it a priority nor do they believe that it is something they need in their lives. I believe that dancing is an essential part of life that most humans do not take part in for whatever reasons they have, time, money, beliefs that they can’t dance etc. Well, GuiDance is here to break down Freestyle Street Dance for you so that you can understand more about what it is and hopefully not be fearful of the exponential growth internally and externally that will occur if you decide to start your dance journey.

So, Freestyle Street Dance DOES HAVE FOUNDATION because you are investing yourself into a style of dance that is encompassed by a culture and community of dancers that live and breathe it. Once you have attained the basic foundation of any style you now have the tools to be a great freestyle dancer if you have the commitment and discipline to explore the movements, your creativity and expression. Whatever your reasons for starting your freestyle journey know that if you only focus on the movements and not your feeling first, you’re dancing backwards.

Dance is here to feel ourselves and express our lives, what we go through and what we also have experienced that is stored in our body and subconscious mind. Aesthetics are only a fraction of the beauty of dance. I’ve experienced technically advanced dancers who have no substance or feeling behind their movements, dance is meant to be felt not just to look good. We must feel good! We get to feel good!

I personally got into dancing because I knew that I needed an outlet to express all of my emotions as a young teenager, especially during my parents’ turbulent relationship. As a child, I didn’t know and wasn’t taught how to manage or use my emotions in a healthy way and I definitely didn’t know how to process them mentally. Dance helped me do that.

Dance was and always will be one of the best, if not the best forms of therapy the world has the privilege of tapping into. Dance is a mental exercise, emotional exercise, spiritual exercise and physical exercise. When dancing we engage in all these aspects of ourselves, which is what makes dancing holistic in its nature. Studies have shown that dancing for as little as 20 minutes a day can significantly change your mental and emotional state, it even enhances your brain's functionality over time.

Most people already have a belief that dancing is something that is too hard to achieve being good at. I challenge you to see dance as first a form of exercise, creative expression and therapy before looking aesthetically good, which comes later with practice and experience. You can go as fast or as slow as you’d like but let me tell you something I know for a fact, once you’ve caught the feeling, you’ll never want to stop dancing.

Another upside of being a part of a freestyle dance community is that YOU HAVE A COMMUNITY! That gets together for the same if not similar reasons and if you’re a part of the Krump community you’d know that Krump is highly cathartic and you get to tap into heavier emotions such as anger and rage in a healthy way. This in and of itself can give you unshakeable confidence to live life on your terms and create with zest and courage and trust in yourself and your abilities.

If I haven’t yet convinced you of the power and beauty in Freestyle Street Dance I challenge you to get into a class and experience it for yourself. Just be aware that your mind may just talk you out of it because you may feel inadequate or that you suck really bad and THAT IS TOTALLY NORMAL it is going to happen.

That’s the journey, that’s the whole point of that voice, so we can improve and keep progressing!
